Diploma in Paramedicine

Course Description
This competency-based Diploma program, accredited by TVETA and KNQA, is available in full-time, part-time, online, and blended formats, lasting two years for full-time and 30 months (2 and a half years) for other formats. Learners must attend scheduled practical boot camps and follow unit timelines, with additional webinars enhancing competencies.
The course uses the KRCTI LMS for resource access, discussions, assignments, test results, and the Jones & Bartlett platform for eBooks, quizzes, simulations, and lectures. It combines theoretical learning with practical sessions and 24 weeks (5 and a half months) of clinical experience in teaching hospitals. The program employs diverse pedagogical methods, including instructor-led sessions, videos, simulations, and ambulance and hospital practice. Course materials are of international standards, accessible via various formats and a modern ICT-compliant library.
Course Objectives
- Describe the roles of a Paramedic in the health care system.
- Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of Paramedics.
- Perform the roles and responsibilities of a Paramedic regarding personal safety and wellness, and the safety of others.
- Perform the duties of a Paramedic regarding medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice.
- Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life-span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients.
- Apply principles of Pharmacology and Medication administration in the management of patients under medical direction and within the scope of practice.
- Identify the need for and perform immediately life-saving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation.
- Assess and manage patients of all ages with various complaints, medical conditions and traumatic injuries.
- Apply principles of emergency medical services operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, multiple casualty incidents, gaining access to and extricating patients, hazardous materials incidents, and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction.
Requirements
1. KCSE Grade C or its equivalent with minimum of a C in each of the following (Biology, English/Swahili, Chemistry/Physics/Mathematics)
2. Qualified EMT from Kenya Red Cross Training Institute or any other reputable and recognized institution and duly certified with a valid registration and practice license.
3. Qualified Clinical health care worker holding a valid Certificate/Diploma/Degree in relevant health related course (Certificate/Diploma/Degree in Nursing/Community Health Nursing or a Diploma/Degree in Clinical Medicine or a Degree in Medicine, MBBS/MBChB)
